The first figures released by the spot rate-based Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) after the collapse of Hanjin indicate a limited effect on freight rates. Whilst those from Shanghai to the US went up by 40-50% to USD 1,746/TEU (West Coast) and USD 2,441/TEU (East Coast), respectively, and to North Europe by around 35% to USD 949/TEU, rates to the Mediterranean actually declined from USD 553/TEU to USD 519/TEU. Considering that changes of this magnitude are not uncommon, the awareness of real situation and its impact apparently still has to kick in.
